Environmental Training and Management
Funding source: USAID
This ten-year project provided training for officials of African countries in
environmental sciences, environmental planning, and natural resource
management. At the request of participating African governments and USAID
Missions, SECID provided professional expertise to conduct seminars and short
training sessions on environmental issues of national or regional significance.
Participants included policy makers, planners, trainers, technicians, and researchers.
Long-term training for government and university personnel was provided through
sponsored advanced study at SECID member institutions.
The goal of this training program was to develop the capacity to identify, respond to
and and monitor environmental trends across the region. The project strengthened
African institutions by increasing staff and policy-maker awareness of environmental
issues and incorporating this into
educational planning and policy making structures.
Topics included aspects of urban and rural environment including a focus on industrial
development topics such as pollution, waste management, urban and rural health,
desertification, erosion, deforestation and environmental impact assessments.
