Developing Community Driven Value Chain for Agricultural Products
Funding source: USDA - Food for Progress
Through the sale of US wheat in the DRC, the project is developing efficient
community driven value chains for agricultural products and commodities in
targeted areas of the DRC. Shortcomings in national economic policies, political
turmoil and civil war led to the complete collapse of the Congolese economy
and the gradual erosion of people's livelihood. SECID's ongoing cassava project
showed that with the necessary assistance, given the immense agricultural
potential, the Congolese people can contribute to rebuilding the national
economy based on rural and industrial agriculture.
In consultation with USAID/DRC Mission, project activities will not only assist
current SECID communities expand activities beyond cassava, but also new
activities are developed with farm communities in and around targeted CARPE
(Central Africa Regional Program on the Environment) landscapes. The program
is addressing all major constraints in an integrated and comprehensive fashion
along the entire value chain from production to marketing of the transformed
(value-added) and improved (nutrition and quality) agricultural products. The
introduction of community development principles and the Outgrower Scheme
concept is instrumental in setting up successful and sustainable program activities.
SECID is joined in this effort by Land O'Lakes who has a long track record in
improving and introducing more efficient post harvest technologies and
developing innovative marketing channels.
