Commodity Chain Analysis for Coffee and Cacao

Natural resources and environmental conditions in DR Congo are very favorable
for agricultural production in general and industrial crops such as coffee and cacao
in particular. Through funding provided by the Bureau Central de Coordination
(BCECO) the project is investing significant resources for economic recovery in
DRC, focusing on the rehabilitation of the commodity chains for coffee and cacao.
The objective of this study is to provide government officials with:
- A true assessment of current conditions of all aspects in the commodity
chain, from production to trading on the world market, with particular
emphasis on extension, processing, conditioning, and transportation;
- Developing achievable recommendations on rehabilitation of commodity
chains; and
- Production of cost and benefit estimates for short, medium and long
term adoption of recommendations.
The technical team is composed primarily of skilled local practitioners supported by
targeted international consultant assistance. Specific activities include:
- Review and analysis of existing documentation, information and literature;
- Conducting stakeholder analyses to involve all interested parties in the
development of recommendations;
- Design and implementation of regional field surveys and guiding documentation;
- Review and analysis of field surveys;
- Conducting workshops to gain participation and feedback from
government officials;
- Preparation of final report focusing on solutions and recommendations to
rehabilitate the commodity chains for coffee and cacao.
