Emergency Response to the Outbreak of the Cassava Mosaic Disease Phase II
Funding source: USAID

Building on successful work completed in the first phase of the project,
SECID was awarded a subcontract to continue its effort to reduce the impact
of cassava mosaic disease (CMD) on rural communities attempting to rebuild
after the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) protracted internal conflict.

Under subcontract to the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA),
SECID will provide local communities with the means to address and sustainably
resolve the threat to their food security caused by the outbreak of the CMD in
the DRC. Our primary mission is to quickly provide disease-resistant cassava
planting material to farmers.

SECID’s unique approach to disseminating the improved planting material revolves
around building the capacity within local community-based and non-governmental
organizations to propagate and disseminate the improved planting materials.
Through this mechanism, SECID is building improved sustainability into the fight
against existing strains of CMD as well as improving the ability of communities
to respond to future outbreaks of this and other diseases that afflict cassava.

This phase of the project will target the south and south-eastern portions of the
Eastern Province, working in and around the communities surrounding Kisangani.
