The purpose of this project was to provide institutional development support to the
Institute of Rural Economy (IER) in order to increase the effectiveness of its farming
systems research program in Mali. The project focused on the:
- Expansion of farming systems research and extension. Under this
component, farming systems research expanded to two agricultural
production zones.
- Improvement of research-extension linkages. This component
strengthened and developed four kinds of linkages: within the research
system, between IER, extension agencies, and farmers; between IER and
training institutions; and between research organizations and those charged
with agricultural policy and national planning.
- Development and training of staff. Under this component, the project sought
to strengthen the capacity of the national agricultural research and training
institutions in Mali to conduct effective and appropriate farming systems
research and extension. Approximately 21 Malian participants received
Masters and Doctors degree training under this project.
