Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM)
Funding source: USAID

This project was designed to build upon the successful experiences of its
predecessor, the Senegal Reforestation Project. Working with the Ministry
of Environment and Protection of Nature (MEPN) to help rural communities
in Senegal develop land use management plans, the project was instrumental
in
increasing community participation in the identification, planning, use and
conservation of natural resources. The goal was to increase private sector
incomes derived from the exploitation of natural resources, consistent with
decentralized and sustainable natural resources management. The project's
efforts led to:

  • Adoption of improved natural resources management techniques;
  • Training in and adoption of participatory land use planning in
    rural communities;
  • Improved villager access to mapped inventories of local natural
    resources, relevant technical information and trained extension agents;
  • Mastery of financial and administrative skills by villagers;
  • Implementation of government decentralization policies for natural
    resources management, and
  • Increased incomes within participating communities.

The project was on the cutting edge of a new generation of environmental
management efforts in Senegal because of its community-based approach.
Through the use of dynamic and versatile land use designs, the project served
as a model for the implementation of other natural resources management
activities in the country and the region as a whole.
