Biodiversity and Tropical Forestry Assessment
Funding source: USAID

SECID under the PLACE IQC with ECODIT, conducted a country-wide assessment
of biodiversity and tropical forestry conservation needs and related issues for the
purposes of complying USAID’s environmental procedures (22CFR 216) and the
Sections 117, 118, and 119 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended,
and Agency guidance on country strategy development.

The assessment examined: the current status of biodiversity, tropical forests and
water resources; major ecosystem types; natural areas of critical importance, such
as wetlands for species reproduction; plant and animal species that are endangered;
recent, current, and potential primary threats to biodiversity; ongoing conservation
efforts; legislation related to the environment; and how USAID’s programs and
proposed country strategy meet the needs for sound biodiversity and tropical
forestry conservation.
