Insurance and Risk Management Education in Indonesia’s
Non-banking Financial Sector

Funding source: USAID

In recognition of the successful Alliance for Indonesia Insurance Education
project, USAID awarded an additional grant to SECID to continue and expand
education programs to Indonesia’s Institute of Insurance and Risk Management
(STIMRA). With support from USAID as well as the Federation of Indonesian
Insurance Associations (FAPI) SECID will provide technical assistance to STIMRA
to conduct S1 and D3 programs. Students will work 4 days a week at their
sponsoring company (Monday through Thursday), and attend classes two days
a week (on Friday and Saturday). The project will also implement the expansion
of the S1 program to include a second track in financial risk management.

Working with STIMRA, SECID will continue to conduct the Level I professional
certification program in underwriting, and will implement Level II and Level III
courses later in the project life cycle. In addition, SECID will design and conduct
professional certification programs in actuarial science, claims and other subjects,
with the design of lesson plans to begin in late 2007.

SECID will also vigorously reintroduce and promote the “Magang” apprenticeship
program, beginning with the start of classes in September, 2007. The “Magang”
apprenticeship program targets qualified students from underprivileged families
to serve an apprenticeship at various insurance companies while undertaking
courses for a D3 diploma. Interested insurance companies who want to promote
insurance as a challenging and exciting career path will serve as sponsors and
provide full tuition, pocket money and transportation/meal allowances, and
guarantee a quarterly rotation to all departments of the company throughout
the eight-semester length of the program. In return, the students would work
at their sponsoring company for three full days per week (Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday) and then attend classes at STIMRA on Thursday, Friday and
Saturday. The Magang program will be a top project priority since it is a program
that combines education, job creation and opportunities to qualified candidates
from underprivileged families.
