Forest Ownership and Management Awareness Campaign
Funding source: US Department of Agriculture

The primary goal of the project was to foster technical transfer and exchange
on a variety of environmentally sustainable technologies and land use practices
via training workshops. Auburn University joined SECID in the implementation
of the project. Major components included:

  • Design of Forest Restitution and Ownership Awareness Campaign.
Awareness and training materials were designed to promote activities
to maximize social, economic, and environmental benefits from Romanian
forests through multiple use management of existing forests, and the
    rehabilitation of degraded lands.
  • Private Lands Management Survey and Training of Trainers. The
survey component determined the opinions and needs of stakeholders
with regard to forest management. The training of trainers component
provided government officials and staff with tools to better plan and
implement the restitution process, and also provided citizens, community
leaders and local government officials with knowledge of their legal rights
and responsibilities under the restitution process.
  • Multiple Use Management Training. A study tour included visits to federal
and state agencies, public and private forests designated as multiple-use
and recreational areas. Study tour participants received training on
economic valuation and marketing of non-timber forest products as
well as on multiple use management of forests.
