Sustainable Forest Management II (BOLFOR II)
Funding source: USAID
SECID was awarded a sub-agreement by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) for
implementation of the Sustainable Forest Management (BOLFOR) II project.
The BOLFOR II project supported two major initiatives: increase benefits to
communities from sustainable natural forest management and improve
business practices for forestry exports. The six major project elements were:
- Policy support;
- Institutional support;
- Community-based natural forest management;
- Communications;
- Improved forest management and business practices in the private sector; and
- Promotion of forest exports.
SECID undertook an initial environmental impact assessment to ensure program
applicability and success. Working with member institutions including Virginia Tech
and Auburn University, SECID fielded technical assistance teams to address issues
supporting improved lumber drying, forest product exports including timber and non-
timber products, and forest inventory. SECID worked closely with BOLFOR partners
including TNC and CADEFOR in the areas of forest management, saw milling
operations, community based forestry and forest products certification. |
