The resolution of agricultural problems is central to improving the quality of life
in the developing nations that SECID seeks to assist. As a result of their heritage
as Land Grant Universities, SECID member institutions are continuously active in
their pursuit of improving agricultural systems both in their local communities as
well as in the international community.

SECID member institutions comprise an important element in the international
agriculture development network due to the basic and applied research that they
conduct as well as their role as leaders in agriculture sciences and extension programs.
As Land Grant institutions mandated to respond to their constituent communities, each
institution continues to make major investments in agricultural research and education
to solve problems that impact the international community. This commitment is most
evident in the widely acclaimed new techniques, products and services that member
institutions have developed for domestic and international applications.

These institutions remain sensitive to ensuring that the techniques, methodologies,
and systems they develop are tailored to the contexts existing in developing nations.
Indeed, the concept of
appropriate and practical technology is fundamental to their
historical commitment of service to local communities. This fundamental premise
serves as the key attribute for designing, implementing and evaluating SECID's
international agriculture projects.
